Welcome to Colony Flow Level 491. This stage gives you a festive cat design wearing a Santa hat and a red scarf. You will face a large block of striped background tiles and a set of hidden boxes forming the tail of the cat. You must carefully pull blocks from your tray to feed the ants without jamming your five waiting slots. The striped background can be tricky because it covers so much area right from the start. I play every single level myself and figure out the best routes to take. I will walk you through exactly how to approach this board so you can beat it smoothly without getting stuck.

What You Are Working With

The main puzzle board features a pixel art picture of a yellow cat with a white face. The cat wears a festive red and white Santa hat and a thick red scarf. The background behind the cat consists of horizontal stripes made of alternating light blue tiles. The tail of the cat sits on the lower left side and is made entirely of hidden boxes. These hidden boxes look like grey square tiles with question marks on them. They will not show their true color until you clear a path for them to move.

At the bottom of your screen you will see your tray of colored blocks. Each block has a specific number printed on it. This number tells you exactly how many tiles the ants can clear using that specific block. Just above the tray you have five empty waiting slots. When you tap a block from the tray, it moves up into one of these waiting slots. The ants will then run out of the nest hole located below the board. They will grab the color from the block in the slot and march up the board to eat matching food tiles.

What It Takes to Clear Level 491 Board

To win this level you must clear every single tile from the board. You win when the cat picture and the striped background are completely gone and the ants finish their work. The main rule you must remember is the fail condition. If you fill all five waiting slots with blocks and the ants have no open path to reach matching colored tiles, you will lose the level immediately. The slots will jam and you will have to restart.

Your strategy is to always keep at least one valid path open for the ants. You achieve this by matching the block colors in your tray to the available colors on the outer edges of the picture. As you clear the outer light blue background tiles, you will slowly expose the black outline of the cat and the hidden boxes on the tail. You will then work your way inward. You clear the tail first, then the outline, then the yellow body, the white face, and finally the red hat and scarf.

Colony Flow Level 491 Step by Step Solution

Step 1: Clear the outer light blue background tiles

You need to open up the board by removing the light blue stripes that surround the cat. Look at your starting tray and find the light blue blocks. Tap a light blue block to move it into your waiting slots. The ants will immediately start marching out of the nest hole and head toward the light blue tiles on the outer edges of the picture. The background covers a massive area so you will need to use multiple light blue blocks to get the job done. Keep a close eye on your five waiting slots while you do this. Do not pull too many blocks at once. Let the ants finish using a light blue block before you pull another one into the tray. This steady pace ensures you never jam the board early in the level.

Step 2: Reveal and clear the hidden boxes on the tail

As the ants eat away the bottom left corner of the light blue background, they will expose the tail. The tail consists of hidden boxes. Once the background tiles next to the hidden boxes are gone, these boxes have a valid open path. They will suddenly reveal their true color. In this level the hidden boxes turn into black tiles. These black tiles form the outline of the tail and connect directly to the main black outline of the cat. Find a black block in your tray and tap it. The ants will rush over to the lower left side and start clearing those newly revealed black tiles. This is a vital move because clearing the tail opens up access to the yellow body tiles on the left side of the cat.

Step 3: Start clearing the black outline and yellow body

With the tail out of the way you can now target the main part of the cat. The cat has a thick black outline and a solid yellow body. Look at your tray and pull a yellow block into an open slot. You should also pull another black block if you see one available in the front row of the tray. The ants will split their attention beautifully. Some ants will eat the black outline while others will dive into the yellow body tiles. The yellow section is very large so the numbers on your yellow blocks will count down quickly. You will see yellow blocks with high numbers like twenty two and twenty five in your tray. Use them carefully and methodically. Make sure the ants always have a straight clear path to the yellow tiles. If a black tile blocks the way, you must clear that black tile first before pulling more yellow blocks.

Step 4: Work on the white face and pink cheeks

As the yellow body shrinks, the ants will reach the face of the cat. The face is made of white tiles and includes two bright pink tiles for the cheeks. You will notice white blocks and pink blocks appearing in your tray. Tap a pink block to clear those small cheek tiles. The pink blocks usually have low numbers like four or two because there are very few pink tiles on the board. Once the pink cheeks are gone, tap a white block to send the ants to the face. The white tiles make up the muzzle and the lower part of the face. Continue to monitor your five waiting slots closely. If you pull a white block but the ants cannot reach the white tiles yet, that block will just sit there and take up valuable space. Always check the board to confirm the path is fully open before you tap.

Step 5: Attack the red scarf and Santa hat

screenshot

Now you will see red blocks becoming available in your tray. The red tiles form the thick scarf around the neck of the cat and the main part of the Santa hat on top of its head. Tap a red block to bring it up to the waiting slots. The red block numbers are quite high because the scarf and hat contain many individual tiles. You might see a red block with a number like thirty four. This is an excellent tool because a single large block will keep the ants busy for a long time. While the ants are clearing the red scarf, you can continue to pull yellow or white blocks to finish off the rest of the face and body. Just remember to alternate your colors based on what tiles are currently exposed to the open paths.

Step 6: Clear the remaining light blue background and black outline

By this point the bottom half of the board should be completely empty. The ants are now working entirely on the upper half of the puzzle. You will notice that some light blue background stripes and parts of the top black outline are still left. Tap another light blue block to send the ants up to the top corners. Tap a black block to clear the outline around the ears and the hat. The board is much smaller now so the paths are very easy to see. You still have to be careful with your five slots. Do not get reckless just because the level is almost over. Pull one block at a time. Watch the ants climb up the remaining tiles and clear them away before you add another block to the slots.

Step 7: Finish the top of the hat and the final white trim

screenshot

The only things left on the board are the top of the red Santa hat, the white fluffy ball at the tip of the hat, and a few stray light blue tiles. Your tray will only have a few blocks left. Tap the remaining white block to clear the fluffy ball. Tap the final red block to clear the tip of the hat. Finally tap the last light blue block to clean up the very top edge of the background. The ants will swarm these last few tiles. The numbers on your blocks will drop to zero. The waiting slots will empty out completely. The picture will disappear entirely and you will win the level.

Final Thought

This stage requires patience and careful color management to prevent your waiting slots from filling up. Always focus on clearing the outer tiles before you try to pull blocks for the inner details. Managing the light blue background properly gives you the room you need to tackle the hidden boxes on the tail. The cat design is fun but the large sections of solid color can easily trap you if you pull too many blocks at once. If you take your time and watch the paths open up, you will get through this challenge without any trouble. If you find any step hard to follow in text I encourage you to watch the video above this article to see exactly how the moves flow together.
